The Annapurna Circuit is a 26-day trekking route that circumnavigates Annapurna I (26,545 ft), one of the world's deadliest mountains. The trek traverses Nepal's central highlands, moving through subtropical forests, terraced farmland, alpine meadows, and high-altitude desert. Trekkers pass through villages inhabited by Gurung, Magar, and Thakali communities, crossing the Thorong La pass at 17,769 feet—the route's highest point. The circuit connects several distinct ecological zones over approximately 160 kilometers, with significant elevation changes that create dramatic shifts in climate and vegetation within single days of hiking.
The Annapurna Circuit attracts experienced mountaineers and serious trekkers rather than casual hikers. Historical weather data shows November and April as the most stable months, though conditions remain severe. The trek demands self-sufficiency in remote sections where rescue options are limited and medical facilities are hours or days away by foot. Altitude sickness affects a significant percentage of trekkers, particularly above 14,000 feet. Lodges operate along the main route, but their quality and availability fluctuate seasonally, and water shortages occur in dry months.
Arrivals typically begin at Besisahar on the Marsyandi River's western bank. Most trekkers walk north toward Chame (8,676 ft) over the first 4-5 days, gaining elevation gradually through rhododendron forests and past waterfalls. The middle section ascends steeply to Thorong Phedi (14,100 ft), where most trekkers rest before attempting the pass in a single pre-dawn push. Weather windows at Thorong La are narrow; storms can trap trekkers for days, and snow frequently blocks the pass between December and February. The descent crosses into the Kali Gandaki Valley, the world's deepest river gorge, then follows the river south through Jomsom and Marpha.
Local knowledge proves critical for pacing and altitude management. Acclimatization rest days at Manang (11,975 ft) and Thorong Phedi reduce sickness risk significantly. Many trekkers hire porters or guides from villages along the route; this supports local economies and provides logistical flexibility. Fresh apples, nuts, and local cheese are available in larger settlements like Manang and Marpha, though imported foods command high prices. The route's eastern and western sections experience markedly different conditions—the western Marsyandi Valley receives monsoon moisture, while the eastern Kali Gandaki is rain-shadow desert. Time spent acclimatizing matters more than fitness level for successfully completing the circuit.
